Ms Maive Rute

Deputy Director-General, Joint Research Centre of the European Commission

Maive Rute joined the European Commission in 2005 to become Director for the Promotion of SMEs and Entrepreneurship in DG Enterprise and Industry.

She brought in her extensive management experience in the Estonian private and semi-public sector, notably five years as CEO of KredEx, the funding body for businesses, housing, innovation and export.

In the Commission, Ms Rute also worked as Director for Biotechnologies and Agriculture Research and as Resource Director in DG Research and Innovation until April 2016.

Ms Rute graduated as an agricultural economist from the Estonian University of Life Sciences. She holds an MBA from the Danube University, Austria, and received an MA in international politics from CERIS, Brussels.


Saniye Gülser Corat

Director, Division for Gender Equality, Office of the Director-General, UNESCO

Saniye Gülser Corat is the Director of the Division for Gender Equality in the Office of the Director-General at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.  She was the pioneer in making gender equality a priority at UNESCO and has been with the Organization since September, 2004. She has a wealth of experience in academia, international development and the private sector, and she is also a TEDx Speaker. Before taking up her position at UNESCO, Ms. Corat pursued a dual career as a professor at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa and as a senior international development advisor for the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Canadian International  Development Agency (CIDA), International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Status of Women – Canada, several UN agencies (UNDP and UNCTAD) as well as for a select number of civil society organizations. She planned, managed and evaluated programs and projects in over 30 countries in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. She was also the Chief Executive Officer of an international development consulting company in Canada for 10 years.

Ms Corat has a B.A Honours degree from Boğazici University (Istanbul, Turkey), M.A. degrees from the College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium) and the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada). She pursued doctoral studies at the Political Science Department of Carleton University. She holds post-graduate degrees from Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School.


Dr. Wha-Jin Han

President, Center for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WISET), Korea

Wha-Jin HAN is the president of center for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WISET), Korea. She obtained a B.S. and M.S. degree majoring in chemistry from the Korea University and Ph.D. in physical chemistry division from the University of California at Los Angeles, USA. Since 1993, she has worked as a senior research fellow in Korea Environment Institute (KEI), which is funded by the government, as an expert in environment and climate change policy area and also has been a vice-president of KEI for a long time. Moreover, she has participated in negotiation meeting for the UNFCCC as Korean delegates for several years and has been providing professional advice on climate change policy. She has served as the Secretary to the President for environment and has worked in various government committees as a member: the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance. In addition, she actively worked as a member of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission and the National Commission on Sustainable Development. For women in STEM, she served as a vice-president in the Korea Federation of Women’s Science & Technology Association. She is currently a member of the Advisory Committee for Policy of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.

David Ruebain

Chief Executive, Equality Challenge Unit & Athena SWAN Charter

David Ruebain is Chief Executive of the Equality Challenge Unit which delivers the Athena SWAN Charter. Prior to that, he was a practicing solicitor for 21 years; latterly as Director of Legal Policy at the Equality and Human Rights Commission of Great Britain. David is a member of the Advisory Group of OFFA (the Office for Fair Access) and an equality adviser to the English FA Premier League. David is the winner of RADAR’s People of the Year Award for Achievement in the Furtherance of Human Rights of Disabled People in the UK.

Gabriele Bischoff

President of the Workers' Group, European Economic and Social Committee

Gabriele Bischoff has been the President of the Workers’ Group of the European Economic and Social Committee since October 2015.

She is special advisor at the German Confederation of Trade Unions (DGB), having joined the trade unions about 30 years ago while working part-time as an express delivery worker for the German Post to finance her studies in Berlin. She began her working career at the Berlin Institute for Social Research and subsequently worked at the FHW Berlin School of Economics as a researcher. In 1990, she started to work full-time at IG Metall Germany as a senior advisor for equality. She became Head of Department and was an active member of the EMF and the ETUC Women’s Committees. In 2000, she worked at the Permanent Representation of Germany to the EU as social attaché in Brussels, where she was responsible for social dialogue. After that, she worked as a senior advisor for the EU Presidency in the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs in Germany, dealing particularly with social partner meetings and conferences. Between 2008-2014, she was Head of the European Policy Department at the Federal Executive of DGB.

She is a member of the ETUC Executive Committee.

She is also a member of the board of the European Movement in Germany.

Gabriele Bischoff studied Political Science at the Universities of Marburg and Berlin and holds a diploma in political science from the Free University of Berlin.

Congresswoman and President of the Sub-Commission for Equality and Non-Discrimination, Portuguese Parliament, Portugal

Elza Pais is Congresswoman and President of the Sub-Commission for Equality and Non-Discrimination at the Portuguese Parliament.
She is the President of the National Department of the Socialist Women. Her academic and political career has focused on the fundamental structures of the social life, such as the social integration, drug prevention, fight against domestic abuse and for women empowerment and leadership, gender equality, and fight against any kind of discrimination.

She was the Secretary of State for Equality at the 18th Constitutional Government.

She was the President of the Commission for the Citizenship and Gender Equality, 2005-2010.

She was the Coordinator of the Structural Mission of the European Year for Equal Opportunities for Everyone – 2007

She was the President of the Portuguese Institute for Drug Abuse and Addiction. She was Professor at the Portuguese Catholic University, and at the Faculty for the Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon. She is a Researcher at the Centre of Sociological Studies at the New University of Lisbon, CICS.NOVA; and at the Centre for Research on Penal Law and Criminal Sciences at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, on the topic of domestic abuse.
In 2007 she received the Arco-Íris Award from ILGA-Portugal for her active fight against homophobia and for the recognition of the LGBTI rights.


Dr. Shirley Malcom

Head of Education and Human Resources Programs, AAAS and Co-chair of the Gender Advisory Board of the UN Commission on S&T for Development,

Dr. Shirley Malcom is head of Education and Human Resources Programs  at AAAS. She is a former member of the National Science Board and served on President Clinton’s Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology.

Dr. Malcom is co-chair of the Gender Advisory Board of the UN Commission on S&T for Development. In 2003, Dr. Malcom received the Public Welfare Medal of the National Academy of Sciences, the highest award given by the Academy.

Dr. Annette Schmidtmann

Head of Department for Scientific Affairs, German Research Foundation (DFG)

Dr. Annette Schmidtmann is Head of Department for Scientific Affairs and has been a research manager for 25 years with different responsibilities (life sciences, graduate training, research careers) at the German Research Foundation (DFG) in Bonn and other institutions. The DFG is the self-governing organization for science and research in Germany serving all branches of science and the humanities with a total annual budget of about €3.1 billion, coming from both federal and state governments. In 2015, the DFG funded over 30,000 new and ongoing projects, one third of them being accounted for in the department.

Professor Cobie Rudd is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships) and Vice-President at Edith Cowan University (ECU). She leads gender equity in academia for ECU including as part of the first pilot of the Athena SWAN Charter in Australia. She has provided leadership for a range of national capacity-building and research projects aimed at addressing the challenges of providing skilled, inter-professional and sustainable workforces and in 2011, she was one of five National Teaching Fellows appointed by the Australian Government. She has held a range of senior policy research and advisory roles for both state and commonwealth governments and served on 13 boards of governance.

Prof. Bonder is Director of the Gender, Society and Policies Department at the Latin American Postgraduate Institute of Social Sciences (FLACSO), Coordinator of the UNESCO Regional Chair on Women, Science and Technology in Latin America; the E-learning Master’s Program on Gender, Society and Public Policies (PRIGEPP); the Global Network of UNESCO Chairs on Gender and the LAC focal point of GenderInSITE, a multistakeholder global initiative.

She was distinguished by UNESCO as one of the 60 women worldwide who has helped accomplish the organization’s goals throughout the 60 years of its existence, representing the voices, aspirations, and visions of many women around the world.


Jesper Werdelin Simonsen

Executive Director, Research Council of Norway

Dr. Jesper Werdelin Simonsen is Executive Director at the Research Council of Norway, where he oversees research funding in the areas of health, welfare, education and society, as well as development research and international bilateral cooperation. Simonsen is also currently member Norway’s Committee for Gender Balance and Diversity in Research. Before coming to the Research Council, Simonsen worked for 14 years as researcher and research manager in the field of agricultural research. From 1997 to 2000 he served as State Secretary at the Norwegian Ministry of Environment.

Dr Wafa El-Adhami leads the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Initiative.

With a research background in molecular biology and microbiology, Dr El-Adhami has held a number of senior management positions in the Australian Government, including the Department of Health and Ageing, the Office of Chemical Safety and the Occupational Health and Safety Commission. More recently she has worked internationally as a consultant specialising in health policy, regulation and clinical solutions.

Dr. Stephanie Farrell

2017-18 President-Elect, American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE)

Dr. Stephanie Farrell is Professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Experiential Engineering Education at Rowan University (USA) and the 2017-18 President-Elect of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE).  She also serves as the 2016-2017 Chair of the ASEE Diversity Committee.  Stephanie is principal investigator of the groundbreaking project Promoting LGBTQ Equality in Engineering through Virtual Communities of Practice, funded by the USA National Science Foundation.  This project has generated knowledge about barriers and inclusion strategies, and has brought Safe Zone Ally training to STEM professionals via webinars and workshops at national meetings, equipping hundreds of allies to foster inclusive environments for LGBTQ individuals in academia and industry.

 

Dr. Farrell has been recognised nationally and internationally for contributions to engineering education through her work in experiential learning and faculty development.  Stephanie was the 2014-2015 Fulbright Scholar in Engineering Education at Dublin Institute of Technology (Ireland). In 2012 she was awarded Honoris Causa in Engineering Education from the Internationale Gesellschaft für Inginieurpädagogik (IGIP).  She has been honoured by the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) with several teaching awards such as the National Outstanding Teaching Medal and the Quinn Award for experiential learning.  Her research interests include inductive teaching in engineering pedagogy, development of spatial visualisation skills, and LGBTQ campus microclimates.

Petra is a Managing Director and the European Lead for Accenture’s Accelerated R&D Services (ARDS). Petra is highly committed to helping women succeed on their professional paths. She joined recently from McKinsey & Company, where she led McKinsey’s gender diversity efforts in Switzerland for more than a decade. Furthermore, she was a co-founder of the “Advance – women in Swiss business” Association and served as the Vice President of the Board since its inauguration. Advance is a cross-company and cross-industry Association of 60+ mostly blue chip companies in Switzerland the common goal of increasing the share of women in business leadership roles. Advance served as the blueprint for “Chefsache”, a similar initiative in Germany sponsored by Chancellor Merkel.


Prof. Ursula Nelles

Dissertation on the subject: “Increased danger in any delay – exceptional authorities in criminal procedural law”. Professorial degree (Habilitation) on the subject: “Asset stripping in disadvantage to companies and legal entities” in 1990. Admittance to the bar as a practising lawyer (1990). Substitute professorship at the Universities of Münster and Hamburg and guest lecturer at the University of Nijmegen (NL). In 1991 appointed Professor of Criminal Law and Law of Criminal Procedure at the University of Bremen; parallel teaching assignments at the Universities of Greifswald (1992) and Düsseldorf (1993). Since 1994 professor for Criminal Law, Law of Criminal Procedure, and Economic Crime at the University of Münster and Director of the Institute of Criminal Sciences. President of the German Women Lawyers Association (1997 – 2001) and co-founder of the European Women Lawyers Association (EWLA).  Member of the Advisory Council of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg (1998 – 2008). Dean of the Faculty of Law (2004 – 2006).
From October 2006 till September 2016 Rector of the University of Munster.

Aniela Unguresan is the Co-Founder of the EDGE Certified Foundation, a Swiss based foundation that runs the first global gender certification to companies with gender-enlightened workplace policies. Prior to co-founding EDGE Certified Foundation, Aniela acquired extensive professional experience as a consultant with Arthur Andersen and Andersen Consulting, a trader and project manager with TXU Europe and SIG Geneva, and as the CEO of CT Technologies.

She holds an MBA from the University of Geneva and a BA in International Trade from the academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest.


Dr. Vesselina Stefanova Ratcheva

Co-Author of the Global Gender Gap Report 2016, World Economic Forum

Vesselina Ratcheva is a Data Analyst working in the World Economic Forum’s System Initiative on Education, Gender and Work, with a remit spanning data, analysis and visualization, and a particular focus on innovation within that domain. Ratcheva is a co-author of the Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report, Human Capital Report, Future of Jobs Report and Industry Gender Gap Report, and in the past has led and collaborated on research projects spanning topics such as skills, identity (gender, ethnic), organizational culture, political mobilization and international migration. Ratcheva has consistently employed quantitative and qualitative research methods in endeavours aimed at finding the best ways to ensure more just social and political systems. Ratcheva previously led on research and evaluation for a skills charity in the United Kingdom, has served on the editorial board of Studies of Ethnicity and Nationalism, organized a conference to bridge research on the Balkans, and presented original research to a variety of expert audiences. She holds a PhD in Social Anthropology and an MSc in Comparative and Cross Cultural Research Methods from Sussex University, and a BA in Social Anthropology and Mathematics from the University of Cambridge.

Dr. Felecia M Nave

Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Prairie View A&M University

Dr. Felecia M. Nave currently serves as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Prairie View A&M University. In addition to her university-level leadership role, Dr. Nave is a professor of Chemical Engineering within PVAMU’s Roy G. Perry College of Engineering. She is also a member of the Texas A&M University System Graduate Faculty.

Dr. Nave has taught and conducted research related to membrane separations, water purification, controlled drug delivery, engineering education and gender in STEM. Over the years, she has received more than $9 million in funding from various agencies to advance her technical and education related research agenda. More specifically, Dr. Nave is directly engaged in research and programmatic projects related to gender and underserved population advancement and representation in STEM. She invests extensively in K-12 Outreach, encouraging K-12 students to pursue careers in STEM and to heighten their awareness of college and STEM in general.

Dr. Nave has written several peer-reviewed journal publications and book chapters. She has also led numerous national and international presentations and workshops. She is the recipient of various awards and honors, including, most recently, Diverse Issues’ Emerging Scholars Under 40.

Lina Salanauskaite

Lina Salanauskaite is a researcher at the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) in Vilnius, Lithuania – a regulatory agency of the European Union. EIGE supports the EU and its Member States in promoting gender equality, fighting discrimination based on sex and raising awareness about gender issues. Previously, Lina Salanauskaite worked in the EU Commission, DG Employment, Social Affairs & Inclusion. Lina Salanauskaite holds a PhD in Social Economics and Social Sciences from Maastricht (the Netherlands) and Antwerp (Belgium) universities and has an extensive research experience in the analysis of social protection and labour market policies, employment and social inclusion trends, developing and using tax-benefit microsimulation models and other welfare, gender and socio-economic issues.

Dr. David Goldstein

Professor and Chair of Biological Sciences, Wright State University

Dr. David Goldstein is Professor and Chair of Biological Sciences at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, USA.  Dr. Goldstein is a physiologist whose laboratory work has been supported for most of the last 3 decades by the National Science Foundation (NSF).  Dr. Goldstein recognizes that institutions and societies, like natural systems, gain strength and stability from diversity.  During more than a dozen years as department chair, Dr. Goldstein has increased the representation of women faculty in his department from about 15% to nearly 50%, and he has cultivated a culture of inclusion, collegiality, and success.  Dr. Goldstein has been principal investigator of the LEADER Consortium, a multi-institutional initiative supported by the NSF ADVANCE program. In that capacity, he has worked to implement a number of programs, processes, and policies in support of enhancing the recruitment, retention, and success of women STEM faculty.   He has also been involved in initiatives to serve a diverse student body, including particularly research programs for under-represented students and implementation of a regional STEM-themed public secondary school.

Deborah Husbands

Senior Lecturer, Psychology Department, University of Westminster

Deborah Husbands is a part-time Doctoral Researcher and part-time Senior Lecturer in the Psychology Department at the University of Westminster, London, UK. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a member of the British Psychological Society and Black British Academics. With a developing interest in intersectionality and a specific focus on experiences of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students, Deborah’s doctoral research uses Black female students’ cultural narratives to explore ways in which they construct identity in higher education. The findings offer scrutiny for higher education institutional practices that affect retention, progression and award/attainment for students from marginalised groups. Deborah has also worked collaboratively on a cross-institutional project exploring students’ sense of belonging, and has provided evidence to the government on BME staff and student sense of belonging in higher education.

Dr. Lily Yu is a Project Coordinator at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), Japan, where she leads on Research and Programme Development on Women’s Empowerment, with a focus on gendered innovation, ICT, STEM, entrepreneurship and impact assessment.  Prior to joining SPF, she was Research Partnerships Manager at the British Council in Tokyo, where she coordinated bilateral projects to strengthen education, research and funding links between universities, government agencies, foundations and the private sector in the UK and Japan.


Dr. Jean-Claude Worms

Chief Executive, European Science Foundation

Dr. Jean-Claude Worms is Chief Executive of the Strasbourg based European Science Foundation (ESF). With over 22 years’ experience in research management, Dr Worms has played a key role in formulating science policy and implementation through high-level structures of the European Commission, and of the European Space Agency (ESA) in which, since 1999, he was observer to ESA’s Ministerial Conferences.

Prof. Belinda Colston

Director (Science), Eleanor Glanville Centre, University of Lincoln

Belinda Colston is the founding Director of the Eleanor Glanville Centre at the University of Lincoln, UK. She has been the strategic lead for gender equality at the University since 2012, and has developed a range of sector-leading initiatives for the support and sustained career development of female academics in STEMM disciplines. She is also the founder of the Newton Academy – the Science Club for Girls, which has been engaging young girls in science and engineering (age 11-14 years) across Lincolnshire (UK) since 2014.

Professor Colston holds both a BSc Honours degree in Chemistry and a PhD (Chemistry) from the University of Manchester, UK. She worked as a Research Fellow with the Atomic Energy Authority and Nirex (UK) and for many years was a consultant to the British nuclear industry. She is a STEMM career academic with 30 years’ experience of post-doctoral research in UK academic institutions, and is currently Professor in the School of Chemistry.


Prof. Jennifer Love

Senior Advisor to the Provost on Women Faculty, University of British Columbia

Prof. Jennifer Love began pursued doctoral studies with Prof. Paul Wender at Stanford University and NIH-funded postdoctoral studies with Prof. Robert Grubbs at the California Institute of Technology. She rose through the ranks at the University of British Columbia where she is now Professor and Senior Advisor to the Provost on Women Faculty. She has won a number of awards, including an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers in 2012, the AstraZeneca Canada Award in Chemistry in 2008, the UBC Science Killam Teaching Award in 2009 and a CNC IUPAC travel award in 2011. She became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) in 2016. She has given over 80 invited presentations around the world. She has served as the vice-Chair, Chair and past-Chair of the Inorganic Division of the CSC. She is an Associate Editor for Catalysis Science & Technology and has served on both the editorial board and editorial advisory board of Dalton Transactions. Love’s research program spans the traditional boundaries of organic and inorganic chemistry. Her group aims to develop fundamentally new, cost-effective and low-waste reactions for the synthesis of medicinally important compounds by exploring the mechanism of reactions at late transition metal centres.


Dr. Sally Everett

Deputy Dean at the Lord Ashcroft International Business School, Anglia Ruskin University

Dr Sally Everett is Deputy Dean at the Lord Ashcroft International Business School, Anglia Ruskin University and is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  She is the chair of the Disability Working Group which is driving forward its inclusive curriculum, and is co-lead (with Rachael Cornwall and Caroline Watts) of the university’s Women’s Network steering group which promotes gender equality in Higher Education leadership. Her research interests include innovation in business education and food tourism. She has recently published work on social media and food festivals, including a book on ‘Food and Drink Tourism: Principles and Practices’ (2016).

Dr. Stella Quinones

Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Texas at El Paso

Dr. Stella Quiñones is Co-PI of a STEM Accelerator Project funded by Educate Texas to increase the engineering degrees awarded to women by supporting faculty through professional development and inclusion activities.  Dr. Quiñones also participates in the development of a unique and creative model to increase retention, success and transition of first-year high-risk students funded by the Department of Education.  She has received various prestigious teaching awards for innovative course design and cutting-edge technology in the classroom by collaborating with students, faculty and staff at UTEP, Olin College of Engineering and Purdue University.  She is Chair of the Women’s Advisor Board to the President at UTEP and is active in various other roles and committees dedicated to the success of students.  Dr. Quiñones serves on the editorial board of International Scholarly Research Notices, associate editor of Journal Computer Applications in Engineering Education and reviewer for Journal of Electronic Materials and Physica Status Solidi.     

 

Dr. Quiñones has a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from UTEP with 20 years’ academic experience.  Her areas of expertise include Engineering Education, Nanoscale Manufacturing and 3D Manufacturing, with interests in Advanced Manufacturing and Materials for Biomedical Sensor Applications.

Dr. Zara Nanu

Chief Executive Officer, Gapsquare

Zara Nanu has established Gapsquare to link science and technology in order to close the gender pay gap. Zara holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of the West of England and an MPA in International Management from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. Dr. Maren A. Jochimsen

Managing Director, Essen College of Gender Research (EKfG)

Maren A. Jochimsen holds a Doctorate in Ecological Economics from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Before joining the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, as Managing Director of the Essen College of Gender Research (EKfG), a central research institute of the University, in 2010, Maren A. Jochimsen was Secretary General of the European Platform of Women Scientists EPWS in Brussels (2005-2009) and is currently serving on the EPWS Executive Committee as the association’s treasurer.

 

Her postdoctoral research on the integration of caring activities in economic science took her to the University of Cambridge, Harvard University, and the University of Amsterdam. In cooperation with EPWS she ran the BMBF project “Ready for Dialogue”suggesting a strategic alliance on the integration of the gender dimension in science and research


Cheryl Miller

In a career spanning 25 years, Cheryl Miller Van Dyck has held global leadership roles in blue chip companies in the transport, banking, telecom and IT industries in Asia, North America, Europe and Russia. As founder of the Brussels-based Digital Leadership Institute, she has spent the last seven years leveraging disruptive technologies for the benefit of the world’s most under-served communities. Dr. Margaret Bailey

Senior Faculty Associate to the Provost for ADVANCE, Rochester Institute of Technology

Dr. Margaret Bailey is the principal investigator (PI) and director for the NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation project (NSF 1209115) titled ADVANCERIT. The goal of this large-scale, multi-year university-level organizational transformation effort is to increase the representation and advancement of women STEM/SBS faculty. Dr. Bailey leads the entire program and manages grant activities focused on educational programs promoting positive cultural change as well as managing various funding opportunities including Connect and Partnership Grants. Dr. Bailey serves as senior faculty associate to the provost for ADVANCE, and she co-chairs the President’s Commission on Women.

 

In addition to her university-level leadership roles, Dr. Bailey is a professor of mechanical engineering within the Kate Gleason College of Engineering. Dr. Bailey teaches courses and conducts research related to Thermodynamics, engineering and public policy, engineering education, and gender in engineering and science. She is the co-author on an engineering textbook, Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics, which is used worldwide in over 250 institutions. In addition to technical scholarship areas, Dr. Bailey is directly engaged in research related to gender within engineering and science through the NSF Pathways Project (NSF 0827490). This large, cross-university research investigates the relationships between gender, participation in co-op, self-efficacy development, and likelihood of retention through graduation among undergraduate engineering students. In her past and current positions, Dr. Bailey has led efforts focused on increasing the representation of women faculty and students at RIT.

Prof. Christina Ullenis

Expert, KK-foundation Stockholm and member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences

Christina Ullenius was recruited in 1994 to lead the development of the former polytechnic institution Högskolan Karlstad to a full university in 1999. Under her leadership Karlstad University developed into a strong academic institution of international standing in strategic areas for regional development, life-long learning, flexible and distance education. She left Karlstad after 12 years.
Ullenius is a chemical engineer by training and has had a long research and teaching career in organic chemistry at Chalmers University of Technology. She was vice rector at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg 1989 – 1994. She has also spent periods of research in the United States, eg at Princeton University. She is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy for Engineering Sciences. Presently Christina Ullenius is working as an expert for the KK-foundation Stockholm and the University Skövde.

Dr. Bonnie Wolff-Boenisch

Head of Research Affairs, Science Europe

Dr Bonnie Wolff-Boenisch leads the Research Affairs Unit of Science Europe, a Brussels-based organisation, representing 47 Research Funding Organisations and Research Institutes from 27 countries. Among her tasks it to provide strategic leadership to the Scientific Advisory Committee made up of 30 experienced multidisciplinary scientists who give independent advice to Science Europe on key European research policy topics and on the implications of EU legislative and regulatory developments for research.


Dr. Candice J. Foley

NSF S STEM PI/Chair, Suffolk County Community College

With over 25 years of experience in both the research and teaching communities on Long Island, Dr. Candice J. Foley endeavors to bring her perspectives of each of these realms to her STEM students at Suffolk County Community College.   As the Principal Investigator for Suffolk County Community College’s three consecutive National Science Foundation S STEM scholarship grants, as well as the National Institute of Health IRACDA grant (Institutional Research and Career Development Award), the Leona and Harry Helmsley Foundation NSF Science Education for New Civic Engagement and Responsibility  (SENCER) New York Project, and community college coordinator for the NSF LSAMP grant alliance-  “Meeting the grand challenge of preparing students for successful transition into STEM majors and beyond”, Dr. Foley serves as the STEM Coordinator for all SCCC NSF STEM Scholars on three campuses. Dr. Foley received her Ph.D. in Inorganic chemistry from Stony Brook University and a BS in chemistry from the University of South Carolina. She completed a post doctoral appointment at Brookhaven National Laboratory with her research focused upon the design and development of inorganic cluster compounds for radiopharmaceutical and electron microscopy applications.

Dr. Foley has also served on national grant projects involving curricular reform for chemistry education.  Her experiences at both the State University of New York at Stony Brook and Suffolk County Community College, and the close collaboration and geographic location between the two, has enabled her to focus upon the adaptation and implementation of these innovations in classroom learning through curricular innovation and technology based software for the community college application and she has delivered workshops at national meetings on curricular innovation and reform.  Dr. Foley is a delegate to the SUNY Research Foundation Undergraduate Research Steering Committee, the Empire State STEM Education Initiative and the Long Island STEM Hub.


Prof. Martine Rahier

Vice-President, European University Association

Originally from Belgium, and mother of one, Martine Rahier holds an Engineering degree in Agronomy from the Free University of Brussels (1977). She continued her studies in the USA at the Universities of Cornell and Berkeley, and obtained a PhD in Science from the University of Basel in 1983, and “Habilitation” in Ecology from the University of Zurich in 1993. Granted a professorship by the Swiss National Science Foundation in 1988, she became a Professor of Entomology and Animal Ecology at the University of Neuchâtel in 1994. In 2001, she founded the “Plant Survival” National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR), a network comprising more than 200 people. In 2008, she was elected rector of the University of Neuchâtel ending in August 2016. Martine Rahier has been a member of several national and international university committees, from appointment commissions to committees designing study programmes in various universities; she has also been president and member of committees assessing research programmes and projects, as well as of scientific associations. Author of numerous publications, she has also supervised a large number of doctoral theses. Martine Rahier was a member of the Rectors’ Conference of Swiss Universities (2008-2016) and president (2013-2015) of the “swissuniversities”. She is member of the German accreditation council since 2013, vice-president of European University Association, since 2015, member of the council of the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria, since 2017.

Philip Kass is the Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Equity and Inclusion in the Office of Academic Affairs at the University of California, Davis.  He holds DVM, MS (Statistics), and PhD (Epidemiology) degrees, and holds appointments as Professor of Analytic Epidemiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine and School of Medicine.  His responsibilities include research into determinants of rates of advancement, oversight of faculty hiring and promoting effective practices with respect to enhancing diversity in the tenure-track ranks, and annually performing analyses of faculty salaries across the university leading to unique individual-level equity adjustments.

Diana Bilimoria is KeyBank Professor and Chair of the Department of Organizational Behavior at the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University. She was the 2011-12 Division Chair of the Gender and Diversity in Organizations Division of the Academy of Management. She has served as the editor of the Journal of Management Education. She has been internationally recognized for her leadership, research and service. At Case Western Reserve University she received the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women’s Spotlight Series Prize for Women’s Scholarship (2007), and the Weatherhead School of Management’s Doctoral Teaching Excellence Award (2002).


Linda P. B. Katehi

Chancellor Emerita, Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Women and Gender Studies, University of California, Davis

Linda Katehi served as UC Davis’ sixth chancellor from 2000-2016 and is the first woman to hold this post. She holds distinguished faculty appointments in electrical and computer engineering and in women and gender studies. Tullia Gallina Toschi (Bologna, Italy, 1965) is Full Professor at the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences (DISTAL), University of Bologna (UNIBO), where she teaches Food Analysis and Chemistry (comprehensive of a module of Sensory Evaluation), Applications of Unit Operations and Food Technology and Environmental Impact. She coordinates a research group of instrumental and sensory analysis of food, many international and national research projects and directs the research interests to the study of methods for verifying the food authenticity, with a special interest in the vegetable oils and fats, in particular olive oil. She studies also food innovation, re-use of by-products and virtuous interactions in the research & development, such as the industrial symbiosis. She collaborates with many universities and institutions in Europe and oversee. She is President of the UNIBO “Guarantee Committee for Equal Opportunities, Employee Wellbeing and Non-Discrimination at Work” and Deputy Rector for the Wellness at work (four-year period 2013-2017). Prof. Gallina Toschi is actually coordinating PLOTINA and OLEUM Horizon 2020 projects.

Havidán Rodríguez, Ph.D.

Dr. Havidán Rodríguez is the Founding Provost & Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, and a tenured professor in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology, at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). He also served as President, Ad Interim, and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas – Pan American (UTPA). Prior to arriving at UTPA, Dr. Rodríguez served as the Deputy Provost, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and International Programs, and Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware. He was also a core faculty member and former director of the Disaster Research Center (DRC), the oldest and one of the leading social science disaster research centers in the world. He obtained his PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Rodríguez has served on a number of committees for the National Academy of Sciences and on review panels for the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Ford Foundation, and was the Chair of the Latina/o Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association.

In her spare time she is a Science Communication Consultant, Vice-President of Euroscience, a member of the ESOF2018 International Steering Committee and Secretary General of Europ’Attitude.


Dr. Anna Berga i Timoneda

Chair of Woman in Science Committee, Inter-University Council of Catalonia

Anna Berga holds a BA in Political Science and Sociology and a PhD in Sociology from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). She is associate professor at the Faculty of Social Education and Social Work Pere Tarrés, Ramon Llull University (URL). She has been Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the UAB (2009-2010).

Her fields of knowledge are adolescence and youth, social risk, inequalities and gender studies; she has participated in various research projects and has published numerous scientific papers. She has formed part of several Boards, including the Advisory Council of the National Youth Plan (Catalan Government).

Since 2010 she is member of the Rectoral Team of Ramon Llull University. She was Vice-rector for International Relations and Students from 2010 to 2012, and at present she is the General Secretary. She is also the President of the Women in Science Committee of the Catalan Inter-University Council.

Lynn T. Singer, PhD

Deputy Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Case Western Reserve University

Dr. Lynn Singer is a professor of epidemiology & biostatistics, pediatrics, psychiatry and psychology at the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Singer has directed a number of large, federally and privately funded research programs. These include a 19-year study of high-risk, preterm infants with lung disease and their families; a longitudinal study of cocaine-exposed infants in Cleveland from birth to 12 years; and a birth cohort study of MDMA exposure in London, England. She also directed the Cleveland site research of a multisite industry study that evaluated the effects of long-chain polyunsaturated acids (LCPUFAS) on infant development that resulted in a patent. She has edited two books, Psychosocial Assessment of Adolescents, and Biobehavioral Assessment of Infants, and authored more than 150 articles in medical and psychological literature. She currently serves as Chair of the Steering Committee for the International Center for Autism Research and Education (ICARE) at Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Susanne Bührer has been employed at the Fraunhofer ISI since 1996, since 2010 as coordinator of the Business Unit “Policy Design and Evaluation”. Prior to working for the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft she studied politics, sociology and history at the University of Stuttgart (Degree Master of Arts) and obtained her doctorate at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) where she worked on a research project on “migration potentials”.

Susanne Bührer has been working in the area of research and innovation policy with a focus on programme evaluations and human resources for many years. She has been involved with numerous projects on questions of “Gender and Innovations”, currently she is the coordinator of the H2020 project EFFORTI (Establishing an Evaluation Framework for Promoting Gender Equality in R&I) (2016-2019).

Sergi Fàbregues

Since 2008 Sergi Fàbregues has worked as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology and Education of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). He holds a BA in Sociology and an MPhil in Sociology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and an MSc in Public and Social Policy from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University. He also has a PhD in Sociology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. His research interests lie in the conceptualisation and assessment of quality in mixed methods research and in the use of QDA software in the social sciences. Currently, he coordinates the UOC’s Gender Equality Unit.
